Statement from the Thruway Authority and Canal Corporation Executive Director Robert Megna on the Passing of Board Member E. Virgil Conway
For Immediate Release: 10/26/2015
"We were saddened to learn of the passing of board member E. Virgil Conway last week.
Virgil dedicated more than half his life to private and public finance, and his passion for improving the lives of others contributed immeasurably to the City of New York and the Empire State.
His vision and enthusiasm lead the MTA into the 21st century, and his guidance and generosity strengthened the many organizations he supported. Virgil had an extraordinary impact on the lives of many New Yorkers, and since December 2006 brought his incredible breadth of knowledge to the Thruway Authority and Canal Corporation board.
Virgil Conway held a special place in the community, the likes of which will remain unmatched for years to come. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Elaine, his children Sara, Allison, William and John, and his grandchildren during this difficult time."
The Erie Canal Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program invites artists to explore the past, present, and future of this iconic waterway through their unique artistic lenses. A partnership between the New York State Canal Corporation and the Erie Canal Museum, the AIR program is a celebration of creativity, history, and stewardship.
The program supports the revitalization of the Erie Canal by blending art with storytelling to illuminate its cultural, environmental, and historical significance. Through exhibitions, events, and public programs, the AIR program brings new perspectives to the Canal's lasting impact on New York State and the nation.
We are thrilled to welcome the 2025 Artists-in-Residence, Kari Varner and Sarah Cameron Sunde, who will begin their year-long exploration of the Erie Canal. Stay tuned for updates on their journey!
