Canal System Update – Reopening

September 2, 2021

The New York State Canal Corporation today announced the following sections of the Canal system will re-open to navigation at 7:00 am on Friday, September 3, 2021.

Erie Canal

Lock E-21 (New London) through E-25 (May’s Point)

Oswego Canal

Lock O-1 (Phoenix) through Lock O-8 (Oswego)

Cayuga/Seneca Canal

Lock CS-1 (Cayuga) through Lock CS-4 (Waterloo)

With the re-openings noted above, the entire New York State Canal system is open for navigation.

Canal Corporation crews are presently reinstalling the upper gates of the movable dams along the Erie Canal and Mohawk River between Lock E-8 (Rotterdam) and Lock E-12 (Tribes Hill) to restore navigation pools to normal levels.  Full navigation depth will not be achieved until Friday, September 3, 2021, and deeper draft vessels should continue to verify conditions until the Canal is restored to its full navigation depth.

Boaters are also reminded that the navigation pool between Erie Canal Lock E-29 (Palmyra) and Lock E-30 (Macedon) continues to operate at a reduced depth. Vessels requiring less than 7 feet of draft can navigate this section of the Erie Canal until further notice. This change is an increase of 2 feet over the previous reduced depth needed due to a maintenance operation.

Safe harbor mooring in the Waterford Flight (Locks E-2 – E-6) has been cancelled.

Boaters should be aware of floating debris generated by recent heavy rainfall and proceed with caution, at a "No Wake" speed as some debris may be hard to see. Some buoys (aids to navigation) may be off station and are being relocated by Canal Corporation staff.
