NOTICE TO MARINERS
CANAL SYSTEM UPDATE
August 24, 2021
The New York State Canal Corporation today announced the following update on weather related closures along the Canal system. Due to continued high water levels and high flows from recent heavy rainfall, specifically in the Finger Lakes and Central New York region, many sections will remain closed for at least the next 10 days or until flows recede and conditions become safe again for navigation.
ERIE CANAL
Lock E-2 (Waterford) – Lock E-7 (Niskayuna)
Anticipated re-opening at 7 am Thursday, August 26
Lock E-8 (Rotterdam) – Lock E-13 (Yosts)
Opening in phases starting on Friday, August 27 as flows from the Schoharie Creek recede and the movable dams are re-installed to build navigation pool
Lock E-14 (Canajoharie) – Lock E-15 (Fort Plain)
Anticipated re-opening at 7 am Thursday, August 26
Lock E-16 (St. Johnsville) – Lock E-20 (Whitesboro)
Anticipated re-opening at 7 am Wednesday, August 25
Lock E-21 (New London) – Lock E-25 (May’s Point)
Opening in phases starting on Friday, September 3 as water levels recede within Oneida Lake and the Oswego and Seneca River basins
Lock E-26 (Clyde) – Lock E-28B (Newark)
Reopening at 1:00 pm today, August 24
OSWEGO CANAL
Lock O-1 (Phoenix) to Lock O-8 (Oswego)
Opening in phases starting on Friday, September 3 as water levels recede within Oneida Lake and the Oswego and Seneca River basins
CAYUGA-SENECA CANAL
Lock CS-1 (Cayuga) – Lock CS-4 (Waterloo)
Opening in phases starting on Friday, September 3 as water levels recede within Cayuga and Seneca Lakes
Mariners are reminded that the above schedule is tentative and re-opening sections of the Canal system will be dependent on future rain events, water levels receding and conditions allowing for safe navigation.
As sections of the Canal system re-open, additional Notice to Mariners will be issued.
The Canal Corporation urges all users to register to receive updates through the "Notice to Mariners" notification program at www.canals.ny.gov
