Notice
Tropical Storm Fred: Erie Canal Lock E8 Scotia to Lock E15 Fort Plain
Notice to Mariners
Erie Canal – Scotia to Fort Plain
August 18, 2021
Mariners are advised that the New York State Canal Corporation is monitoring the remnants of Tropical Storm Fred and is taking preemptive measures to reduce water levels in the Mohawk River. Water levels at the movable dams from Erie Canal Lock E-8 (Scotia) to Lock E-15 (Fort Plain) will be gradually lowered overnight to begin the anticipated storm-related drawdown. At 7AM Thursday morning, the Canal Corporation will begin lifting all upper gates on the movable dams in anticipation of high flows later in the day. Mariners are advised to secure their vessels now in anticipation of rapidly changing water levels over the next 48 hours.
Based on published National Weather Service forecasts, the Canal Corporation does not anticipate fully removing the movable dams at this time. Water control actions are currently limited to the upper water control gates only.
Limited capacity for vessels seeking safe harbor is available in the Waterford Flight and Lock E-16. Mariners wishing to proceed to these locations should contact Ted Westerling at 518 461-0942.
Updates will follow.
