Canal System Update – Preparation for Tropical Storm Debby

August 6, 2024

The Canal Corporation is actively monitoring Tropical Storm Debby and is preparing for the possibility of lifting the Erie Canal’s Movable Dams between Lock E-8 in Rotterdam and Lock E-15 in Fort Plain depending on the storm’s forecast.

Residents are encouraged to take appropriate actions regarding any vessels, docks, or other seasonal structures in these areas which may be impacted or damaged by significantly reduced water levels.

If the storm requires lifting of the movable dams, vessels and docks would experience a full lowering of the Canal to winter levels and would likely be grounded following the movable dam lifting operation.

Mariners with trailerable boats are encouraged to remove them from the canal at their earliest convenience.

The Canal Corporation will continue to monitor the path of the storm and will update its plans and the public accordingly through additional Notice to Mariners alerts.

The Canal Corporation urges all users and stakeholders to register to receive updates through the Notice to Mariners notification program by clicking here.
